task command the sincere admiration of his associates.
New York Times's peculiar position in the esteem of the public may make its history of interest not only to working newspapermen and students of journalism but to many readers who are unfamiliar with the technique of newspaper-making and unacquainted with the personnel of The Times. Some episodes, particularly controversial episodes, have been treated with a certain reserve, as it was felt that it would not be wholly fair to present only one side of the case. But in no instance has accuracy been sacrificed to brevity, and it is the belief that nothing relevant to the history of The Times, or to its interpretation, has been omitted.
With respect to my own sentiments on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the present management of The Times, I can do no better than to repeat here the following article, which appears in The Times of August i8, 1921:
Today- twenty-five years ago-August x8, 1896 - The New York Times passed to my management and has ever since been under my unrestricted control. So it may be fitting that I render an account of my stewardship to those who have made The New York Times of today possible - its readers
